If you've tuned into the Travel Channel lately, you may have seen the recent hour-long show that touts Hermosa Beach as being "one of the Top 10 Beaches". Hermosa Beach was recognized for not only its pristine beach, but because of our outdoor activities, festivals and events, nationally televised sporting events, and as the home of the "largest arts and crafts show in Southern California."
A sun-drenched beach village of just 1.3 square miles, Hermosa Beach sits at the edge of the Pacific, just 5 miles south of Los Angeles. The town is the very essence of the Southern California lifestyle, and the mild weather patterns make it an ideal vacation spot all-year round. Temperatures range from highs of 77 degrees in the summer to a balmy 67 degrees in winter, with the nighttime temperatures rarely going below 50 degrees. The spectacular coastline, wide sandy beach, rich history and specialty shops make this community a favorite with Californians. Daytime activities abound in this vacation haven. Hermosa Beach's one and a half mile stretch of sand is the training ground for some of the world's best pro-circuit volleyball players. Festivals and special events abound on weekends. The three-day weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day bring thousands of visitors to Fiesta Hermosa. This street fair, which has been a tradition for 38 years, features 270 crafters and artists, a kiddie carnival complete with a petting zoo and pony rides, a restaurant cantina with international cuisine, beer & wine garden and two soundstages with live bands performing all day long. In January, the City of Hermosa Beach celebrates New Years Eve with entertainment on Pier Plaza. In March, the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival fills the streets with revelers and the whole town becomes "Irish" for the day. And fresh fruits and vegetables are available every Friday at the Chamber's Farmers Market, where residents meet to buy fresh provisions and exchange the latest gossip.

Hermosa's History
Hermosa Beach was originally part of the ten-mile frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo. In 1900, tract of fifteen hundred acres was purchased at $35 per acre from A.E. Pomeroy, then owner of the greater part of Rancho Sausal Redondo.
In the early days, Hermosa Beach, like so many of its neighboring cities - Torrance, Lawndale, Inglewood - was one vast sweep of rolling hills covered with fields of grain, mostly barley. During certain seasons of the year, large herds of sheep grazed over this land, and corrals and large barns for storing grain, as well as providing shelter for horses and farm implements, were located on the ranch between Hermosa and Inglewood. The Spanish words, Rancho Sausal Redondo, mean a large circular ranch of pasture with a grove of willows on it.
The first official survey was made in the year 1901 for the boardwalk on the Strand, Hermosa Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue. In 1904, the first pier was built. It was constructed entirely of wood, even to the pilings. It extended five hundred feet out into the ocean. The pier was partly washed away and later torn down. A new pier was paved with asphalt over its entire length. Small tiled pavilions were erected at intervals along the sides to afford shade for the fisherman and picnic parties. Eventually, a bait stand was built out on the end.
Soon after, about 1914, an auditorium building was constructed. Over the years, it has housed various enterprises. Presently, it is used by the Los Angeles County Life Guard Service. Hermosa Avenue was the first street to be paved. The boardwalk on the Strand was constructed of planks. The walk extended the entire length of the two-mile Strand. High tides sometimes washed away portions of this walkway. In 1914 part of it was replaced with cement. The remaining two thousand feet on the north end was finally completed with cement in 1926.
The water supply for the town was installed by the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company in 1901. They located a well on the north city limits. Later the company bought an artesian well and built a reservoir just outside of the east end of town. The water from this well was drawn from a seemingly limitless subterranean reservoir three hundred feet below the surface.
The Santa Fe railway was the only transportation system through Hermosa Beach. It was seven blocks from the beach. The street that led to the tracks was called Santa Fe Avenue, but was later renamed Pier Avenue.
There was no railway station for Hermosa, but Burbank and Baker built a platform on the west side of the tracks near Santa Fe Avenue, and later the Railroad Company donated an old boxcar to be used as a storage place for freight. In 1926, the Santa Fe Company built a modern stucco depot and installed Western Union telegraph service in it. The first city election for city officers was held December 24,1906. The town incorporated and its charter was obtained from the state on January 14, 1907.
At that time, the city acquired ownership of its two-mile stretch of ocean frontage, this being included in an original deed to the city from the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company. The deed stated that this land was to be held in perpetuity as a beach playground, free from commerce, and for the benefit of not only residents of Hermosa, but also for the sea lovers of Southern California. Hermosa Beach has never permitted cheap amusements along its strand and its original ideals are its present day standards. The sports of fishing and swimming have always prevailed here and many famous anglers have reeled their lines off its pier. Persons of world renown have splashed through the ocean's rollicking surf on vacations in Hermosa.
In March, 1926, a lateral sewer system for the city connected up with the $350,000 trunk line of the South Bay Sanitation District and was designed to accommodate a population of thirty thousand. The Hermosa system is now a part of the extensive project that covers the southwest portion of Los Angeles County.
Ocean View School, now torn down, was the first school building erected. It was located on top of a sand dune four blocks from the beach, and no walks or streets of any kind led to it when it was built. This school was constructed of wood, two stories high with a belfry.
St. Cross Episcopal Church was the first church building erected in the city of Hermosa Beach. Donations, subscriptions and entertainment provided the finances for the lumber and carpenter work.
Mr. Otto Meyer opened the first grocery store and fish market. The first boarding and rooming house was conducted in a frame building on Pier Avenue. Mrs. M. Darling operated it and also sold bread occasionally. John Kerwin bought the property and operated a bakery in the building during the summer months.
A bowling alley was the only amusement house operated. It was located in a long, one-story building on the corner of Eleventh Street and the Strand. It housed several activities during its time. Here, at one time, was to be the tax collectors office and the press rooms for the Hermosa Beach Review. The first theater building was owned and operated by a woman. She bought the lot from Ben Brown and constructed a frame building on it. The building was eventually turned into a garage and is located just in back of the Barstow Building on Tenth Place. In 1915, C.D. Barlow built a small brick building which he used as a motion picture theater. The Otto Meyer building showed early motion pictures also. The building had previously been used as the city hall. It is now the Bijou Theater.
Hermosa Beach Civic Club was a citizen's improvement association and was the only civic club ever organized in the community. The Woman's Club dates back to 1907 and is still vigorous. The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce was organized also in 1907 and is still active. Much of the city's popularity is owed to the faithful and enthusiastic service promoted by this chamber.
The first bank was organized by James Walker. Located on the northwest corner of Pier and Hermosa Avenue, it was called the First Bank of Hermosa Beach. Later it became the First National Bank.
The first street lighting system in the community consisted of one 40-watt bulb at the end of each side street along the Strand.
Famous people have, at times lived in Hermosa Beach or visited it during the summer seasons. Judge Curtis Wilbur, a secretary of the U.S. Navy, was interested in it's legal affairs in earlier days. William Jennings Bryan, in the last years of his life, rented a summer home for several seasons and brought his family to Hermosa to spend their vacation. He was often seen on the pier in the mornings wearing a plebeian suit of overalls and an old straw hat, enthusiastically fishing and "yarning". Charles Lindbergh was entertained a number of times as a guest of the Surf and Sand Club.

All the best of Southern California lies within, or a short drive away from the one-and-a-half square miles which make up Hermosa Beach (Hermosa means beautiful in Spanish.). Situated right on the Pacific Ocean, Hermosa's average temperature is 70 degrees in the summer and 55 degrees in the winter. Gentle westerly sea breezes take the edge off what can be high summertime temperatures in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the county. The same breezes help keep the smog away 360 days of the year. Want to play? In Hermosa Beach there are one-and-a-half miles of the prettiest, cleanest beach in Southern California. Have fun with volleyball, paddleball or beach ball, while creating a golden tan or toning up.
Surfboarding, skateboarding or boogie boarding are all here. Other beach equipment is easily rented for those without. Other options are jogging, skating or biking along the Strand, the paved strip paralleling the beach and connecting Hermosa with the neighboring beach cities. The Strand also boasts an architectural stylist's smorgasbord of delights in multi-city residences from Art Deco to Victorian.
After hours, it's time to start visiting the many restaurants in Hermosa Beach. From the Il Boccaccio to the Good Stuff on the Strand, taste treats are in store for almost any type of food. After dinner, find choice entertainment at the nationally famous Comedy and Magic Club, dance at the Lighthouse, or just relax and visit other nightclubs in the area.
Besides year-round beach activities, winter skiing is only a few hours away at Big Bear, Mt. Baldy or Lake Arrowhead. Several National Forests are within a short drive of Hermosa Beach with all their coniferous and sylvan atmosphere and recreational possibilities.
A beautiful place to live. There are residences on the Strand, bungalows scattered throughout the town, and multilevel homes in the hills with ocean views. Hermosa Beach offers a microcosm of Southern California options for any lifestyle. The city boasts a community theatre. Service, social, senior citizen and veterans clubs are available. There is even a weekly farmers market with farm fresh produce, eggs, honey and flowers.
As for employment and life careers, Hermosa Beach is within a few minutes commute of many of the largest and best known names in corporate America in such fields as aerospace, high tech, industrial, service and financial. Supporting them are service types of businesses needed to provide jobs for the seven million people in the Los Angeles metropolis. LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) is just fifteen minutes from Hermosa Beach.
And... most any day, people might watch movies or TV commercials being made at the beach, on the Strand, or in various vintage restaurants and cocktail bars. Volleyball tournaments are nationally televised from Hermosa Beach, site of the Annual Surf Festival, a sports event which draws lifeguard participants from all over California and as far away as Australia.

For the past 37 years, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce has produced Fiesta Hermosa, the "largest arts & crafts fair in Southern California". Over 270 artists and crafters are featured, including painters, photographers, ceramicists, jewelers, sculptors, and handicrafters. The festival takes place every Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) in downtown Hermosa Beach, California. With the ocean as a backdrop, Hermosa Beach is an ideal place for a summer festival with temperatures of 80 degrees and balmy sea breezes.
People flock to Fiesta Hermosa each year for not only the art fair, but for the Music - which is always of the highest caliber. There are two stages featuring live music - one at the Main Stage on the Pier and another in the Charity Beer & Wine Garden. The Main Stage features the finest "tribute bands" performing the classic rock of bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, to name just a few. Rock n' roll, zydeco, country western, and rhythm and blues are showcased in the Charity Beer & Wine Garden.

Our buses and generators will be fueled with clean-burning biodiesel, made from used vegetable oil donated by local restaurants Patrick Molloy's, Sangria, and Café Boogaloo. Glass and plastic containers will be recycled by Consolidated Disposal, and the food court vendors will be using compostible plates and cutlery.

Fairgoers rave about our Food Court, which offers 18 different kinds of ethnic food choices. Everything is delicious - from roasted corn to Thai, Greek, and Mexican food, to tri-tip sandwiches and barbequed sausages, to the Hermosa Beach Lifeguards' famous fish tacos. Handmade guacamole, crepes, and shaved ice creations are also popular with the crowd. And where else can you find cotton candy, caramel apples, fresh squeezed lemonaide, and funnel cakes?
Our popular Charity Beer & Wine Garden features microbrews from the Union Cattle Company, a local brewery and steak-house located in Hermosa Beach as well as in Pasadena. Five different beers, a selection of wines, and icy coolers are served by town "celebrities", including the mayor, city councilmen, and non-profit organizations such as the Rotary, Kiwanis, HB Education Foundation, and other civic organizations. All proceeds are returned to the participating organizations for their good works in the community.
The Kiddie Carnival features a 30 foot slide, mechanical rides, rock climbing wall and bungee jump, and games for kids from 3 to 10 years old. Pony rides, a Petting Zoo, and facepainters are sure to delight the little ones.
